After four months of engaging with the local community through Kitchen Table Conversations, events, a survey and one on one conversations, we received overwhelming support for the idea of finding and backing an independent candidate in the way the residents of Indi and Warringah have done in recent elections. Here are some of the reasons why:
"Sick of Party Politics"
Our current member of Parliament claims to be a modern Liberal, supporting issues like strong action on climate change, but the current party system means, that in the end, he will always vote with his party - a party where climate deniers such as Barnaby Joyce and George Christensen hold undue influence and where claims of ill treatment of women are all too common. Our member has NEVER voted against the majority of his party since entering Parliament in 2016.
The job of an elected representative is to represent the wishes and the interests of their electorate and the Nation, but increasingly the policies of both major parties seem more influenced by vested interests and wedging their opposition.
The majority of Goldstein residents want strong action on climate change. Yet our member has voted VERY STRONGLY AGAINST:
- The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA)
- Increasing investment in renewable energy
- Treating govt action on climate change as a matter of urgency
- A fast transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy
- Protecting the barrier reef
We want an elected representative who votes for us, not their party!
"Sick of Being a Safe Seat"
With a margin that has always been, until now, greater than 7%, Goldstein has been considered a safe seat. That means we are taken for granted by the LNP and other parties don't even try to win here. At the moment, we don't count.
We deserve better than that and we CAN do better. Constituents of other safe seats have made their electorates marginal. Why can't we?
"Inspired by Zali Steggall and other Independents"
Zali Steggall, Helen Haines, Cath McGowan, Rebekah Sharkie, Andrew Wilkie and Kerryn Phelps have demonstrated through their own actions and conduct that politics can be done differently. They speak out regularly and have put forward legislation with substance on climate change, integrity in politics and refugees.
Democracy is something we should feel proud to be a part of and inspired to be part of. Electorates like Warringah and Indi have shown us this is possible - we don't want to settle for less. Goldstein is full of people who are top of their field - people who work hard and have achieved great things. Surely we can find someone we WANT to vote for - someone we can be proud of.
Don’t let Goldstein be taken for granted again this election, help us find our #Independent4Goldstein.
